This is the 26th US state highpoint we have been to. Enticing the angler, the lake is stocked from November through April. In this video, we break our 8 month hiatus with a trip to Black Mesa, Oklahomas highest point. Recently stocked with largemouth bass, sunfish and channel catfish, the 160 acre Lake Carl Etling provides an ideal spot for fishing and swimming. The park, located in the extreme northwest corner of the state, offers 56 campsites, RV sites, and a large group campsite. A valley of hike-able grasslands and plains. I visited the highpoint of Kansas, Mount Sunflower, then drove through Colorado, aiming for the Oklahoma panhandle and Black Mesa. In northwestern Cimarron County, Oklahoma, Black Mesa reaches, the highest point in the state of Oklahoma. Then it turned sharply towards the mesa and approached its brief climb.

It traveled parallel to the steep slopes of the mesa itself. The first 2.5 miles remain flat to sloping. The trail began as a gently rolling dirt road (off-limits to vehicles). Here in the arid prairie environment, typified by grasslands and rocky buttes, wildlife sightings include the Texas horned lizard, mountain lions, bobcats, pronghorn, black bears, bighorn sheep, nine species of snakes and dozens of bird species.īlack Mesa State Park, also covered in a layer of black lava, takes in 350 acres of this rugged terrain. The sprawling mesa was formed of volcanic rock, erupting from a vent in the Raton-Clayton volcanic field nearly 180 million years ago. Black Mesa is a Nature Preserve Black Mesa, rising 600 feet above the surrounding valleys, is protected in the 1,600-acre Black Mesa Nature Preserve and is managed by the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. The trail follows the north side of the mesa for 2.25 miles. It wasn’t too hard, but there is little shade and it can get hot, so you’ll want to carry plenty of water. At this point, the trail climbs around 500 feet in a mile. It’s mostly level hiking with the exception of climbing the mesa. Black Mesa follows the Cimarron River for 28 miles, beginning in Colorado, crossing the northeast corner of New Mexico and on into the Oklahoma panhandle. The Black Mesa Trail is 4.3 miles one way. Just 14 miles to the north, the park's namesake stretches across the horizon. While scanning the horizon from Oklahoma's Black Mesa State Park there's a good chance of spotting the highest point in the state.
